Magic 8 HST

The half square triangle gives you all the flexibility, especially as a quilt designer. I often ask myself why I have stayed away from them for so long? The HST is simple and fun - made with two right-angle triangles producing a square shape. There are multiple ways to make HST based on how many you need 2, 4, or 8 at a time. We will dive into the Magic 8 method used in my free quilt pattern! Sign up for the Z Insight newsletter and get your copy of Transformation Quilt.

Supplies Needed:

How-To: Magic 8 HST

Time Spent: 9 - 11 minutes

I recommend watching the video for detailed instructions. Short on time? I love watching YouTube videos at increased playback speed (under settings) to save time.

1. On the wrong side of the fabric, mark the diagonal lines from corner to corner. fig 1

2. Place the square on top of another square. Sew a ¼” seam on each side of the marked line. fig 2

3. Using a rotary cutter, cut vertically, horizontally, and diagonally crossing the center. fig 3 & 4

4. Press open and trim each unfinished HST to measure square. fig 5
