Quilt Batting, The Silent Partner
Let’s start simple.
Quilting batting is the middle layer of a quilt that provides warmth, insulation, and stability. It is made of natural or synthetic fibers, and its main purpose is to provide loft and cushioning to the quilt.
As a quilter, it is important to care about batting because it plays a crucial role in the final look and feel of a quilt. The choice of batting will impact the quilt's warmth, softness, drapability, and overall texture. For example, a low-loft batting will result in a flatter, more minimalist quilt, while a high-loft batting will create a bulkier, cozier quilt. Additionally, the choice of batting will also impact the quilt's care requirements and how it could hold up over time.
Therefore, it is important to consider the type of batting you use for each quilt project, based on your desired end-result and the intended use of the quilt. It's recommended to test out different battings to find what works best for your quilting projects.

Batting Vocabulary
BATTING - the filling or middle layer of a quilt sandwich, positioned between the quilt top and the backing fabric. It provides warmth and thickness to the quilt.
QUILT SANDWICH -the layered structure of a quilt, consisting of the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric. These layers are basted or pinned together before quilting.
LOFT - refers to the thickness or height of the batting. High loft batting is thicker and provides more warmth, while low loft batting is thinner and works well for lightweight quilts.
BEARD - refers to fibers poking through during quilting, creating a fuzzy look. Choose batting that minimizes this issue for a neat finish.
SHRINKAGE - some types of batting, especially wool, may shrink when washed. It's important to account for potential shrinkage when selecting and preparing your batting.
NEEDLE PUNCH - batting that has been mechanically punched with needles to interlock the fibers. This process makes the batting more stable and less likely to shift during quilting.
SCRIM - a thin layer of stabilizing material added to some battings, especially cotton battings, to prevent stretching and distortion. It helps maintain the shape of the quilt over time.
THERMALLY BONDED - is made by fusing fibers with heat. It's durable, stable, and suitable for both hand and machine quilting.
RESIN BONDED - batting is created by using a glue-like substance to bind fibers. It provides stability, preventing shifting for a firmer result.
QUILTING DISTANCE - is the spacing between stitches on a quilt. Choose the right distance based on the batting type to achieve your desired result in your quilt project.
